The many ways to tie an Egg

Egg flies are very simple flies that are easy to tie and work great at catching fish that are keyed in on eating salmon eggs during the spawn. Another great use for them is for stocked trout, as stocked trout are used to eating pellets, and they will gobble these little egg flies up faster than anything else. Best of all, these egg flies are some of the easiest flies to tie, and very quick. When you get into a rhythm tying them, you can tie a couple dozen in an hour, filling up a fly box in no time.

Egg flies are on a list of flies that some fisherman refuse to fish, stating they aren't real fishing flies, or they call them cheater flies. I don't really understand this. I feel just about any fly can be used, as long as your following local laws and regulations. If you have fun fishing egg flies, by all means fish them. I have been known to use them once in a while, and in fact one of the largest trout ive ever caught was on an egg fly. They were feeding off spawning salmon, sitting behind them and eating up the roe. There were two very large brown trout doing this. I was able to hook one, and my buddy hooked the other. 28 inch brown trout! So again I have no issues with fishing egg flies as I do it myself. And you should too, given the right situations and conditions. It could be the best fishing trip you ever have!
